本土文化的10个重要有关英文名词

●道教Taoism
普遍烧香(burn the incense)烧金纸 (burn the paper money)以及多神论。台湾普遍民间信仰。
● 佛教Buddhism
不烧香不烧金纸，一种近似哲学的宗教，讲究因果轮回，来世再生，苦行僧的概念。
●妈祖Matsu
台湾与中国东南沿海的海神，本名林默娘，因救出海的爸爸而溺死，她庇佑著渔民。详情请看妈祖的故事。
●大甲妈祖遶境Dajia Matsu Pilgrimage
台湾最大宗教活动之一，总时间为步行９天８夜。从彰化到嘉义，意为妈祖巡视与大甲镇澜宫有关的庙宇。被UNESCO认定为世界文化现存遗产(world living heritage)
● 信众Worshipper
有著某种信仰、崇拜的人，基本动词是worship (v.) 崇拜，膜拜。
● 舞龙舞狮Dragon and lion dance
庙会喜庆活动时最常见的两种表演形式。
●阵头The leader of the parade(Zhentou)
民间祭祀或庙会活动时最常见的表演形式之一，种类繁多，常见的有八家将、宋江阵、官将首等等。
●三太子Santaizi:
The third prince 三太子，不是sometimes 喔！
●Loyal attendant:
Matsu忠实的仆人，eyes that see a thousand miles and ears that hear upon the wind (顺风耳和千里眼)
●神轿 Sedan chair
也就是妈祖绕境的时候的坐骑啦！

A: Hey, Sam, welcome to Taiwan! How long are you going to stay here?
A: 嗨Sam，欢迎到台湾来！你这次打算待多久呢？

B: About 10 days. Do you know of any interesting Taiwanese events during my stay?
B: 大概10天左右吧！你知道在这个期间，台湾有哪些有趣的活动吗?

A: You should check out the Dajia Matsu Pilgrimage. It is held in March in the lunar calendar and it lasts for 9 days and 8 nights. Millions of people will participate in this religious event. During this long walk, you can see fireworks, dragon and lion dances, even electronic Santaizi, and a lot of local and traditional performing arts.
A: 你应该参观每年农历三月大甲妈祖遶境９天８夜的活动。百万人会参加这个宗教活动。在这随妈祖走的时候，你会看到烟火，舞龙舞狮，电音三太子，非常本地的传统表演艺术。
 
B: Where should I stay during this long walk?
B: 那我这期间应该睡哪呢? 

A: Of course you can stay at the hotel, but there are many kind people who are willing to provide their homes for worshippers to crash for a night. Temples will prepare unlimited vegetarian foods for thousands of participants when they are hungry.
A: 当然你可以睡饭店拉。但这时会有很多好心人愿意提供他们的家给信徒当作睡一晚的地方。庙宇也会准备无限的素食食物给上千上万的信徒饿时吃。

B: That will suit me as a backpacker. How should I start?
B: 这样很适合我这种背包客也，我该如何开始呢？

A: Google the Dajia Matsu Pilgrimage. You can find the route and decide which day you want to join.
A: 上网搜寻大甲妈祖遶境的路线，你再决定哪一天你要参加。 

B: I can't wait to see the craziness and the crowd of the Taiwanese traditional culture. I am going to take many  pictures and be ready for the unknown surprises.
B: 我等不及要来看到台湾传统文化的疯狂与拥挤的人群。我会照很多很棒的照片并等待这未知的惊喜！！

要烧香之前要先就烛火点燃香柱，这个动作就是点香。
●烧金纸/纸钱 burn the joss paper money
金纸也有一说是spirit money，总之就是阴间的货币，用来焚烧奉献给神祇或是亡灵使用的。
●香炉the incense burner / 金炉 the joss paper money burner
●掷茭 throw divination blocks
掷茭是信徒用来和神明沟通的管道之一，有点像是占卜，透过投掷茭杯(divination blocks)的结果来了解神的旨意；因为茭杯的摆放结果比较单一，通常问题的答复比较像是是非题的选项。
●抽签 draw a fortune stick / 签诗 a fortune poem
抽签诗也可以视为沟通管道的一种，透过签诗的解读来了解福祸吉凶。不过因为签诗通常内容比较间接隐晦，有时还需要请庙方的人员帮忙解读说明。

A: So how was your experience with Daja Matsu?
A：你参加大甲妈祖遶境的感觉怎么样呀？

B: It was amazing! Everything was so magical. The worshippers, the temples and all the rituals were very new to me. There were so many things to see and  experience!
B：超赞的！所有的东西都好奇幻。信徒们、寺庙和许许多多的仪式对我来说都好新鲜。太多东西可以看和体验了！

A: Did you try anything interesting during the trip?
A：这趟旅程中你有尝试了甚么有趣的事吗？

B: Actually I did. I followed the traditional worship rituals to bow and burn the joss money. I even threw divination blocks and drew a fortune stick!
B：还真的有喔！我遵循了传统的祭拜仪式鞠躬和烧纸钱，甚至掷了茭和抽签喔！

A: Sounds cool! As a Taiwanese myself, I haven't touched divination blocks and fortune sticks before!
A：酷毙了！我身为一个台湾人，我从没有碰过茭杯和签诗哩！

B: Hahaha! I can show you how it works if you want to give it a try!
