在「限定范围」内用来列举总数为 2 ，表示「一个...剩余的另一个....」
There are only two people at the bus stop. One is an old man; the other is a police officer.
公车站只有两个人。其中一个是一位老人，另一个则是一位警察。
I'm going to take two tests today. One is math, and the other is English.
我今天有两科考试，一科是数学，一科是英文。

在「没有限定的范围」内随意列举出两个，意思为「一个...另一个...」
There are several books on the table. One is a dictionary; another is a picture book.
桌上有好几本书。其中一本是字典；另一本是图画书。
