What are some of the most important qualities of a good teacher?
Years of experience, degrees and certificates?
Or is there something that cannot be measured and tested?
Something that sets apart good teachers and the outstanding ones?
Now, throughout my 10-year teaching career, I've met hundreds of teachers, studied thousands of students, and had hundreds of parent-teacher conferences.
I have two degrees in English Linguistics and Education, as well as a UTeFL certificate,so I learned the theory.
But things work differently in a real-life classroom,so what I've always wanted is to become a teacher who understands children, who knows how to make learning fun, have engaging and interactive lessons, and create a child-centered classroom as opposed to a teacher-centered one.
And you know what?
It turns out that those are the qualities most parents value in a teacher.
More than 80% of them mentioned that they like to see a teacher whounderstands children, has expressive body language, whose classes are highly interactive, and also a person who is kind and humorous, and one who can develop a child's interest in their subjectand inspire them to become lifelong learners.
I'm about to become a father myself, and when choosing a teacher for my child,I'll definitely put these qualities before anything else.
Now, what qualities do you think are the most important for a teacher to have?
