Part 1: Introduction and Interview

Q1: How do you usually go to work or school?

A: Because of the traffic congestion (交通堵塞) in my city, like most people, I commute (通勤) by motorcycle. Cars are inconvenient here because it takes ages to get anywhere. My city does have a metro system, but unfortunately, neither my apartment nor my office is near a metro station.

Q2: Is public transportation in your area good?

A:A: Honestly, not really. Although it is affordable (不很贵的), it's not very reliable. A couple of months ago, my motorcycle broke down, so I had to take a bus to work. It came later than scheduled and as a result, I arrived late.

Part 2: Individual long turn

口说第二部分是「个人陈述」。考官会给考生一个题目卡、铅笔和草稿纸。题目卡上有一个话题和考生要提到的要点。考生有一分钟的时间准备，然后发表一至两分钟的演说。

I live in a crowded city, so naturally, there are different types of transportation systems there to serve the needs of residents and tourists. So, while people use all of these transports at one point or another, depending on their needs as well as the availability of those transports, one common transportation system that people use is a mass rapid transit (捷运) system called MRT

The MRT services operate (营运) from around 6 a.m. and usually end around 1 a.m. Because of its long hours of operation and comparatively low fares (车资), MRT is widely used by people from all walks of life and professions. Students, office workers, housewives - you name it.

I'd say MRT is very convenient. The network (运输网) is quite extensive (广泛的), with multiple lines connecting different areas of the city. The network is also expanding (扩展), with several new lines in construction (兴建中). People can reach most parts of the city by MRT alone. The trains run very frequently, generally every 3 to 5 minutes. With MRT, you can get to most parts of the city in under an hour. You don't get much more convenient than this.

I like MRT a lot because I ride it every day. The trains are fast, comfortable, and air-conditioned. They are always clean because food and drinks are forbidden onboard. It is true that they get crowded during rush hours (上下班尖峰时间) and on special days such as New Year's Eve, but at least they can get me wherever I want to go faster than other transports. I can't imagine my life without MRT.

Part 3: Two-discussion

第三部分为「双向讨论题」。考官和考生将针对某个话题进行广泛和抽象的讨论。

Q1: What kind of improvement has there been in transport in your country in recent years?

A: There have been several ways that transport has improved. First, more major roads have been built, which means it is easier to travel long distances. For example, an improved highway that connects two major townships in eastern Taiwan has made it easier for people to see the beautiful scenery in the area. Also, there has been the introduction of mass transit like trams (有轨电车) and MRT in many cities. In our capital city, they have also extended (扩展) the MRT system, so it now links more areas of the city. This has helped many people as traffic during rush hours is terrible if they have to travel on the roads.

Q2: What changes would you like to see in the transport system in your country?

A:Well, I'm a supporter of the environmental movement, so I believe it will be a great benefit if there are more eco-friendly vehicles and more reliable public transport. As we have seen, emissions (排放) from fuel-based vehicles (燃油车) like cars and motorcycles have contributed considerably to global warming. Without a doubt, it is necessary to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. It seems obvious to me that governments should phase out (逐步淘汰) the use of petrol vehicles in urban areas and encourage residents to use public transport, drive electric vehicles, or even better, cycle.
